Harris issues statement saying she is “deeply disturbed” by Trump’s assassination attempt

Vice President Kamala Harris issued a statement on Sunday condemning the alleged assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. The Democratic presidential candidate said she was “deeply disturbed” by the attack on Trump and condemned the political violence in the country.

“I am deeply disturbed by the possible assassination attempt on former President Trump today. As we gather the facts, I will be clear: I condemn political violence,” Harris’ statement said. “We must all do our part to ensure that this incident does not lead to further violence.”

The vice president’s statement came later in the day after it was confirmed that Secret Service agents shot a suspect with a scoped rifle near the former president’s golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday. The FBI declared the incident an attempted murder.

“The FBI has responded to West Palm Beach, Florida, and appears to be investigating an attempted assassination of former President Trump,” the FBI said in a statement.

Harris also thanked the Secret Service and law enforcement for protecting the former president. In addition, she said she was grateful that Trump was not injured or seriously harmed.

“I am grateful that former President Trump is safe,” Harris said. “I commend the U.S. Secret Service and its law enforcement partners for their vigilance. As President Biden has said, our administration will ensure that the Secret Service has all the resources, capabilities and protections it needs to accomplish its important mission.”
