Summer weather isn’t the only thing getting warmer these days.

The action on the court at the Houston Summer Basketball League was just as heated.

Forget the fact that most players are BFFs (that’s “buddies” for those of you of my generation) off the field.

It’s a battle royale every night after kickoff as players defend the hoop and dive for loose balls like it’s the NCAA Final Four.

As most of the players are from the region, they have been playing against each other since the youth leagues and beyond.

The 2024 edition features 11 teams competing in triple headers on match nights.

Houston Playground boss Tom Ballingall is the league coordinator with valuable assistance from Kendrick’s Jake Gratzinger.

The league will continue into the summer, when temperatures could become even more stifling.

That won’t stop players from scrambling on the hot asphalt and giving it their all… not even up close.
