Atlanta ranks #1 city to start a career

According to a recent assessment of the financial well-being platform WalletHub, Atlanta has become the best city to start a career.

As the top destination for first-timers, the Georgian capital took first place in a comprehensive assessment of 182 urban centers nationwide. WalletHub’s analysis, released in May, used a nuanced 70-point system, with Atlanta scoring 65.84 points. The study methodology was based on two essential factors: professional opportunities and quality of life.

Atlanta is enjoying an impressive 8.9% annual increase in median household income, currently at around $79,000. The city’s job market is thriving, with many highly rated companies offering plenty of entry-level positions and high job satisfaction rates. For aspiring entrepreneurs, the city ranks sixth among large cities for starting businesses. It is also recognized as the fourth most entertaining city and an ideal location for singles, offering a well-rounded lifestyle beyond professional activities.

However, despite its economic prosperity and reputation as a “black mecca,” Atlanta struggles with a significant racial wealth disparity. The Atlanta Wealth Building Initiative found a stark contrast: The median household income of white families, $83,722, triples that of black families, or $28,105. A 2024 report from the organization found that the wealth gap is even more pronounced, with white households owning 46 times more wealth than black households.

Alex Camardelle, vice-president of

research and policy from the Atlanta Wealth Building Initiative highlighted the need for change. “It takes large-scale public investments and structural policy changes to reverse centuries of damage that have led to the racial division of wealth,” Camardelle said. Atlanta Civic Voice.

Efforts to address this inequality continue. As previously covered by BLACK BUSINESS, JPMorgan Chase awarded $1.7 million to the Atlanta Wealth Building Initiative and the Center for Community Progress to advance equity in Black businesses and neighborhoods. The center revealed plans to use the funding to foster affordable housing partnerships, renovate unused properties and create proposals encouraging philanthropy, policy, energy efficiency and more.
