Runnells man found dead, Des Moines man charged with murder

Authorities have charged a murder suspect and identified a man found dead after a reported shooting in Runnells. According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, a 911 call came in about 1 a.m. Friday about a shooting in the 4500 block of 116th Street in Runnells. Officers arrived at the scene to find Richard David Selby, 50, of Runnells dead. About two and a half hours after the initial 911 call, officers found the suspected shooter, 35-year-old Jacob Harbold, during a traffic stop in Des Moines. Harbold was booked into the Polk County Jail on a first-degree murder charge Friday morning. Investigators believe the two were related and close. “There is a connection; the two individuals knew each other,” said Capt. Ryan Evans of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. “They were family members, but I’m not sure exactly how. They were close. They knew each other.” Sheriff’s deputies say several people inside the home witnessed the shooting, but the exact number of people is still being determined. Authorities have charged a suspect with murder and determined the identity of a man found dead following a reported shooting in Runnells.

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, a 911 call came in around 1 a.m. Friday about a shooting in the 4500 block of 116th Street in Runnells.

Officers arrived at the scene and found 50-year-old Richard David Selby of Runnells dead.

About two and a half hours after the first 911 call, officers found the suspected shooter, 35-year-old Jacob Harbold, during a traffic stop in Des Moines.

Harbold was booked into the Polk County Jail Friday morning on a charge of first-degree murder.

Investigators assume that the two were related and had a close relationship.

“There is a connection; the two knew each other,” said Captain Ryan Evans of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. “They were family members, but I’m not sure how exactly. They were close. They knew each other.”

According to the sheriff, several people in the house witnessed the shooting, but the exact number of witnesses is still being determined.

They say they are still investigating and interviewing witnesses to find out why Harbold shot Selby.
