Burning permits suspended in San Diego County

SAN DIEGO, CA — As the weather warms, Cal Fire San Diego will be lifting all permits for outdoor burning in private residential areas in San Diego County.

The suspension takes effect at 8 a.m. Saturday and prohibits the outdoor burning of yard waste such as branches and leaves, according to Cal Fire.

“Due to the heightened fire danger, we are suspending all burning permits effective June 1,” said Tony Mecham, unit and fire chief. “This action is essential to protect our communities and resources during this time of heightened danger.”

According to Cal Fire, firefighters across the state have already extinguished more than 1,250 wildfires since January 1.

While outdoor burning of yard waste by homeowners is no longer permitted, Cal Fire urged residents to take the extra time and prepare for wildfires by maintaining a minimum defensible distance of 100 feet around each home and building on their property and being prepared to evacuate in the event of an emergency.
