A 12-year-old boy was seriously injured after he was attacked by a buffalo while herding in Ramada village in Tana River County on Sunday.

Police said the boy was tending his family’s goats when the buffalo attacked him around noon.

“He suffered a deep abdominal cut causing his intestines to protrude. He also had a deep cut on his right thigh,” said a report from the Garsen police station.

He was rushed to the nearby Garsen Health Center for transfer to Malindi Sub-County Hospital for specialized medical treatment, police added.

Officers from the Kenya Wildlife Service visited the scene in the afternoon and were expected to issue a follow-up report on the incident.

Wild animal attacks are common in the Tana River and neighboring counties of Tsavo East and Tsavo West national parks.

Sunday’s incident occurred just a month after a 60-year-old man was killed by a stray buffalo in Voi town in Taita-Taveta County, neighboring Tana River County to the south. .

The man suffered from hearing impairment and was attacked by a stray buffalo on April 15.
