Man receives 8 years in prison for knife attack

A 35-year-old convicted felon pleaded guilty Friday and was immediately sentenced to eight years in prison for nearly killing a homeless man in a stabbing attack in Garden Grove.

Ronnie Alexander Vinal pleaded guilty to attempted murder, with enhanced punishment for aggravated assault and personal use of a deadly weapon. Vinal, who accepted a plea deal with Orange County Superior Court Judge Larry Yellin, received credit for 869 days served in prison.

According to police, Vinal stabbed the man multiple times in the face on May 15, 2022.

Garden Grove police were called around 10:35 p.m. to the 12900 block of Beach Boulevard, near Garden Grove Boulevard and the Garden Grove-Stanton border, where officers encountered the victim, police said. The victim was attacked outside a business in the 7900 block of Garden Grove Boulevard.

The victim had stopped breathing and had no pulse, but paramedics were able to resuscitate him and take him to hospital, where he was in critical condition, police said.

Police were able to find surveillance video from a store showing the attack. The victim was standing in bushes outside a store when Vinal attacked him without warning, police said. The victim managed to escape across Garden Grove Boulevard, where he was found by two sheriff’s deputies, police said.
