TORK TURNOVER? Detroit Tigers’ Spencer Torkelson is no longer a rookie, but the problems date back to that time

Game Notes: The Tigers begin a new series with the Houston Astros on Friday, and although the franchise has proven to be a perennial contender over the past decade, making at least the American League Championship Series for seven straight seasons, the The team is struggling to get out of the gates. this year after replacing manager Dusty Baker.

The Astros have only won four of their series so far this year, and that includes a two-game win over the Colorado Rockies. They have also lost at least three straight games five times this year.

Although the Astros aren’t playing very well, the Tigers enter their next series not playing their best baseball either. Detroit was swept by the New York Yankees and lost two of three games to the Cleveland Guardians last week and will look for a bounce-back opportunity against a struggling Houston ballclub.

While they try to get things back on track, the Tigers will see Casey Mize get the start after getting beat up pretty badly in his last game against the Yankees. The Bronx Bombers collected nine hits in the 5⅓ innings pitched by Mize and scored five runs off the right-hander in an eventual loss. Before that, Mize had been pretty solid, allowing just two runs in 11 innings in his two starts before the Yankees’ exit.

After Friday’s game, the Tigers will face the Astros two more times, with former ace Justin Verlander set to take the mound on Sunday. The Tigers will have their team’s ace, Tarik Skubak, pitching Saturday.
