Woman arrested for abusing a disabled adult

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a day program director at Sunrise Community Facility, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, on charges of abuse of a disabled adult.

On May 10, 2024, HCSO responded to a call for service following reports of abuse.

During their investigation, investigators learned that an employee had observed Mercado becoming angry at a victim with cerebral palsy and intellectual disabilities for moving too slowly. The witness reported seeing Mercado push the victim into a door and kick him repeatedly.

On May 17, 2024, HCSO arrested Angela Mercado, 43, without incident.

Mercado was charged with:

“It is disgusting that someone in a position of trust intended to help others would use such violence against a vulnerable person.” Sheriff Chad Chronister said. “There is no place for abuse in our community. Our detectives will continue to work to ensure that every individual, regardless of their background, is protected.”

Mercado was placed on unpaid administrative leave. She remains on leave until Sunrise Community Facility completes its investigation.

This is an active investigation. All updates will be made through the Office of Public Affairs.
