Buffalo Bills urged to make move before training camp

The Buffalo Bills roster has undergone some major changes this offseason. Receiver Gabe Davis left in free agency and they traded receiver Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans. Some people would say they need more weapons around Josh Allen, but this is an overall solid roster.

The Buffalo Bills should once again compete for the AFC East title and be a must-play playoff contender. So what should they focus on heading into training camp at the end of July? In the opinion of ESPN’s Aaron Schatz, this is a contract extension for defensive end Gregory Rousseau.

“The Bills roster doesn’t have many obvious holes, so it’s time to lock some players into their prime. Rousseau is an important part of the Bills’ pass rush, with five sacks and 34 pressures last season. He is excellent against the run, ranking ninth among edge rushers in average yards per rush tackle,” Schatz wrote.

A first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft out of Miami (FL), Rousseau was a mainstay on the Buffalo Bills roster during his first three seasons in the NFL. He started all 46 games he played in, providing production in all facets of the game.

As Schatz noted, the former Hurricane star is making his presence felt as a passer and run defender. Last season, he recorded 5.0 sacks and set career highs with 12 tackles for loss and 18 quarterback hits.

He’s the kind of player you want to commit to for the long term and secure yourself for the future. At just 24 years old, he is scratching the surface of his potential, as he can reach another level.

Expect the Buffalo Bills to continue to expand their role on defense as well. Last season, he played a career-high 585 snaps, but that only accounted for 60 percent of the team’s plays on defense.

If it gets closer to 70-75 percent, he could have his first double-digit sack season of his career. It would be smart for the organization to make a deal this summer, as a big 2024 would only increase his price tag.
