St. George’s police chief is resigning, the mayor confirms

ST. GEORGE, S.C. (WCSC) – The city of St. George’s longtime police chief has resigned two months after the city council’s decision to place him on paid leave, the city’s mayor says.

Mayor Kevin Hart said the city has accepted Brett Camp’s resignation, effective May 1.

“Chief Camp was employed by the City of St. George for approximately 10 years,” Hart said in a statement. “The City thanks Chief Camp for his years of service to the City and its citizens.”

The resignation came two months after the City Council voted to suspend Camp with pay pending an investigation by “an outside source.”

The city posted a statement on its Facebook page about the March 5 vote, adding: “While there is much public speculation, council is unable to answer further questions at this time.”

Hart did not answer questions about the investigation’s completion or findings.

The city announced on its website that it was accepting applications for the position. Applications will be accepted at City Hall during office hours through May 24, the post said.

Camp had served as the city’s police chief since December 2013, according to South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy records. Before joining the St. George Police Department, Camp worked for the Florence County Sheriff’s Office and the Florence Police Department.
