José Urquidy to get second opinion on arm injury

Astros starter Jose Urquidy will visit orthopedic surgeon Dr. Keith Meister for a second opinion on his injured forearm, a person with knowledge confirmed to the Chronicle on Monday.

ESPN first reported that Urquidy would be evaluated by Meister, the Texas Rangers team physician known for his specialization in elbow reconstruction.

Urquidy suffered a setback during a minor league rehab start on May 25 in his attempt to recover from a forearm muscle strain he suffered during spring training. The Astros provided no updates on Urquidy other than that he would seek a second opinion.

Astros general manager Dana Brown said during a recent appearance on the team’s flagship radio station that he was “really concerned” about Urquidy’s injury. Urquidy was in his third rehab start when he suffered a setback and was next expected to rejoin Houston’s rotation.

Urquidy, 29, underwent Tommy John surgery in 2017 while in the Astros’ minor league system. He missed the rest of that season and much of 2018. He returned to make his major league debut in 2019 and made 79 appearances, including 70 starts, with a 3.98 ERA for Houston in five seasons .
