Authorities killed fake bear after one attacked a woman walking her dogs

A woman in northeast Washington was walking her dogs when she was attacked by a black bear.

According to CbcNews, Lynn O’Connor, 63, was walking her three dogs on private property near Mink Creek Road in Ferry County on September 1 when her dogs chased two animals. At first, O’Connor thought the dogs were chasing two cows, but unexpectedly, it was two black bears. An angry female bear attacked the woman, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries and required 18 staples in her head to close the injury.

Her first thought was to strike, and that is exactly what she did; she estimated that she got three good blows in her explanation;

She came towards me, panting and hitting me, her shoulders were very broad and her head was quite low to the ground.

As the bear approached the woman, she dropped to the ground and curled up. The bear scratched her, but it was the three dogs – Sunshine, an Aussie, Kodak, a Newfoundland, and Griff, a golden poodle mix – that chased the bear away.

The entire encounter lasted only a few seconds.

According to a September 2 press release from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, authorities admitted to killing the wrong bear.

Game wardens searched for the bear and found the 120-pound animal in the area where the woman was attacked. They killed the bear. That’s when officers realized they had killed the male bear instead, and not the female bear they were looking for. Officers were unable to find the female bear, and the landowner told officers to leave.

The black bear meat was donated to the US Air Force.
