Franklin street shooting: Bruce Butler arrested and charged in deaths of man and woman found near Buffalo Bayou Trail, HPD says

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A man has been arrested and charged in the shooting deaths of a man and woman found in downtown Houston earlier this month.

According to charging documents, Bruce Butler, 37, is accused in the deaths of Richard Nugent, 38, and RJ Lewis, 66.

On June 20, the Houston Police Department released surveillance photos of a person of interest, later identified as Butler.

Records show a tip led to Butler’s arrest Monday when he allegedly admitted his role in the shooting.

He was charged with capital murder and incarcerated at the Harris County Joint Processing Center.

Records show Butler is homeless and has a criminal history, including car burglaries and assault causing bodily injury.

On June 2, officers said they found Nugent’s body on the sidewalk near Buffalo Bayou Trail. As officers canvassed the area for witnesses, they also found Lewis lying in a stairwell leading to the intersection of Congress and Smith streets.

Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced both victims dead at the scene.

At the time, no motive was known for the deadly shooting.
