Man killed, 4 injured in South Shore apartment fire

A fire in South Shore early Saturday killed one man and injured four others, including two boys.

Firefighters responded to the blaze, which broke out around 2:30 a.m. in a top-floor apartment of a building in the 2400 block of East 78th Street, Chicago police and the Chicago Fire Department said.

A 24-year-old man was found in the apartment and pronounced dead, police said. Two boys, ages 2 and 7, were taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in critical condition.

A 24-year-old woman was also injured and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.

A 27-year-old man was taken to Trinity Hospital with injuries unrelated to the fire.

Police said 23 people were evacuated from the building.

The cause of the fire was unknown.
