8-year-old fights for life after parents die in Memorial Day accident

8-year-old fights for life after parents die in Memorial Day accident

GARNER, NC (WNCN) – A family is torn apart. Garner police said a drunk driver crashed into a car carrying a young couple and their young son.

Tyler Campbell, 28, and Susan Campbell, 29, were killed.

Her 8-year-old son Miles is now fighting for his life in a hospital room.

The smiling, happy family seen in photos provided by family members is now broken.

Garner police told CBS 17 that the Campbells were traveling on U.S. 70 Highway just before 1:30 p.m. on Memorial Day when another driver, 25-year-old Jordan Porter, ran a red light and collided with them.

Investigators have charged Porter with driving under the influence, but said more charges could follow soon.

Family members are now mourning Miles’ parents and praying for his survival.

Tyler’s mother told CBS 17: “Our hearts are literally breaking. My son, daughter-in-law and grandson are wonderful people and they don’t deserve this.”

She also said: “(Miles) is still with us, but it doesn’t look good.”

CBS 17 did some research on Porter and found a list of subpoenas and charges against him.

In a 2018 incident, State Highway Patrol officials said he consumed alcohol while under the age of 21 and lost control of his lane.

Other charges include reckless endangerment of the driver and hit-and-run with property damage.

In April, Porter was cited for speeding after driving 21 miles over the speed limit.

Some of the charges are listed in the court record as “dismissed with leave,” meaning the case has been dismissed and cannot be reopened for further proceedings.

CBS 17 is trying to find out what happened with these charges.

There will be a Vigil for the Campbell family at Garner Baseball Inc. Fields on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
