Former Denver Broncos quarterback Chad Kelly has been suspended six games by the CFL

Former Denver Broncos quarterback Chad Kelly is in trouble again. Just as Kelly had begun to get his career back on track, he was suspended six games by the CFL following allegations made by a former Toronto Argonauts assistant coach.

Here’s something CBS Sports“Cody Benjamin reports on the Kelly suspension.

“Kelly, 30, was accused in a lawsuit earlier this year of making unwanted romantic advances and making threatening comments toward a former strength and conditioning assistant who has been employed by the Toronto Argonauts, his team since 2022. He sued the Argos in January organization also for damages.

“The CFL concluded Tuesday after a third-party investigation into the allegations that Kelly violated the league’s gender-based violence policy. In addition to his suspension, the quarterback must undergo a confidential evaluation by an independent expert and attend mandatory counseling sessions conducted by a gender-based violence expert,'” Benjamin wrote.

Yuck.

It’s unfortunate, but not a huge surprise, especially considering Kelly’s past and the reasons he left Denver. After calling him “Mr. “Irrelevant” – the last pick in the 2017 NFL Draft – the Broncos took their time with the troubled but talented Kelly.

A wrist injury derailed his rookie season, but by the start of his second year, Kelly was fully healthy and looking to capitalize on Denver’s shaky quarterback situation. The Paxton Lynch experiment was on its last legs at the start of 2018, and after trading away Trevor Siemian, the Broncos went out and paid Case Keenum.

Keenum was given a two-year contract that actually only committed the Broncos to one season, and although he had enjoyed a career renaissance with the Minnesota Vikings the year before, he wasn’t exactly considered a sure answer to all of Denver’s quarterback problems.

Kelly easily overtook Lynch in the preseason, performing quite well and leading to the Broncos announcing their former 2016 first-round pick just before the season opener. That left only Keenum to defeat, and all Kelly had to do was keep his nose clean and watch the veteran implode.

With Keenum leading Denver to a 3-4 start, the winds of quarterback change were blowing as October came to a close. Then-head coach Vance Joseph was eager to try anything that could boost his team and save his job, and it was only a matter of time before the Broncos gave Kelly a starting opportunity.

Then Kelly got himself arrested after a team Halloween party hosted by Super Bowl 50 MVP Von Miller. An inebriated Kelly reportedly left the party location and gained entry to an unsuspecting family’s home in the early hours of the morning.

A confused Kelly had to be shooed away by her vacuum practicing husband, leaving the woman scared and traumatized. Police were called and Kelly was arrested and charged with suspicion of first-degree trespassing. The Broncos released him almost immediately and he pleaded guilty to second-degree misdemeanor.

This ended Kelly’s Broncos career.

Although he spent the 2019 season with the Indianapolis Colts, Kelly was soon out of the NFL after a two-game suspension for his arrest. But the nephew of Buffalo Bills Hall of Famer Jim Kelly wasn’t ready to give up on his career as a professional player.

After a brief coaching stint, Kelly landed in the CFL and heroically led the Argonauts to the 2022 Gray Cup championship. The following summer, Toronto signed him for three years and $1.865 million. This made him the highest-paid player in the CFL.

Kelly led the Argonauts to a 16-2 record in 2023, but fell to the Montreal Alouettes in the East Final. He will now have to miss the first six games of the 2024 season, assuming the suspension and its effects do not cause additional backlash.

Some Broncos fans will always wonder what could have been with Kelly. But the more time passes, the clearer it becomes that Denver dodged a bullet when then-GM John Elway quickly decided to part ways with Kelly in the fall of 2018.
