LADOT is looking for better protection measures after a homeless woman attacked a bus driver

The Los Angeles Department of Transportation began looking for new protections for its buses after a woman hit one of its drivers Sunday afternoon.

The attack occurred around 12:50 p.m. in South Los Angeles near South Central Avenue and Jefferson Boulevard, across from a Los Angeles police station. LADOT said the homeless passenger became angry after the driver told her she didn’t have to pay the fare because DASH buses were free.

A video showed the driver fighting violently with the woman. The suspect punched the driver in the face at least once and pulled at her uniform as she was thrown from the bus. After the fight, the driver closed the doors and drove off.

The driver did not suffer any serious injuries.

“The safety of passengers and riders on our transit services is of utmost importance to LADOT,” the department wrote in a statement. “LADOT is exploring options to improve safety, including strengthening existing barriers between drivers and passengers.”

The LAPD eventually located the suspect and arrested her.
