Erie County SPCA rescues Buffalo River marmot near Naval Park

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — The Erie County SPCA announced they rescued a groundhog from the Buffalo River near the Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park on May 7.

The SPCA said the rescue occurred after Bernadette Clabeaux of WNY Raptor and Wildlife Care, Inc. contacted a groundhog hanging from a ladder.

SPCA officers were dispatched to the scene and were able to rescue the marmot from the deck of the USS Croaker submarine and transported it to safety.

Veterinarians determined the groundhog was cold, tired and hungry, but unharmed, according to the SPCA. The groundhog spent a few days at the SPCA to be monitored, then released it to a nearby location.
