Rhys Hoskins sets the tone with his third Grand Slam

Rhys Hoskins sets the tone with his third Grand Slam

Pat Murphy said Friday afternoon that his Milwaukee Brewers will “play to win” against the New York Mets even though their postseason spot is already secured.

A hit by Rhys Hoskins in the first inning made it much easier, as his grand slam off Sean Manaea paved the way to a largely stress-free 8-4 win at American Family Field.

BOX score: Brewers 8, Mets 4

The Brewers also got four decent innings from starter Frankie Montas, a three-hit game from Brice Turang and good work from several of their relievers as they continue to prepare for their wild-card opener on Tuesday, against either the Mets or the Mets The game will be played by the Arizona Diamondbacks or the Atlanta Braves.

One downside to the game was that outfielder Sal Frelick injured his left hip while attempting to catch a foul ball in the third inning and had to be helped off the field. The X-rays were negative, but he is scheduled for an MRI on Saturday.

Mets make things interesting

Hoby Milner allowed two one-out singles and then struck out a batter in the eighth to load the bases. That brought Harrison Bader into play, who sent a drive wide left that Jackson Chourio was able to intercept with a mighty diving attempt as he neared the wall.

It prevented extra bases, but the Sacrifice Fly allowed a run to score. One batter later, JD Martinez sent a bloop fly to right that Turang gloved but dropped on an error, making the game 7-4.

At this point, Trevor Megill got the call and only needed one pitch to pull out of New York. He then pitched a scoreless ninth, earning his 21st save of the season.

Gary Sanchez hit a solo home run 425 feet to left with one out in the eighth to cap the score.

Milwaukee is chasing Mets starter Sean Manaea

The Brewers scored a run back in the bottom of the fourth with three straight two-out hits – a single by Turang, a double by Garrett Mitchell and an infield single by Chourio – to make it 6-2.

This sequence also haunted starter Sean Manaea.

Montas, meanwhile, exited after four innings after allowing two hits, two runs and three walks with six strikeouts over 82 pitches.

The Brewers made it 7-2 in the sixth when Turang got a two-out walk from Danny Young, stole second – his 50th of the season – and then homered it on a passed ball and a wild pitch brought.

Turang is the fifth player in franchise history to steal 50 or more bases in a season and the first since Jonathan Villar stole 62 bases in 2016.

Mets come into play

A leadoff walk in the third scored Montas as Mark Vientos hit a two-out home run to center to make it 5-2.

The Brewers suffered a blow in the third when Sal Frelick injured his left hip or buttock while hitting the wall along the right field line while trying to catch a foul ball off the bat of Francisco Alvarez.

Frelick had to be helped into the Milwaukee clubhouse and was replaced by Mitchell.

There were also fireworks in the fourth when Mets manager Carlos Mendoza was sent off by home plate umpire Ramon De Jesus after a questionable third strike against Alvarez.

Brice Turang makes another run

Murphy said he used Turang at the plate to give him some additional insight into left-handed pitching before the postseason.

He delivered his second hit in as many at-bats with a bloop double to center in the second, a hit that scored Blake Perkins to make it 5-0. Perkins reached on an error and then stole second despite being fended off by Manaea.

What a start for the Brewers

Milwaukee got a leadoff single from Turang and then two two-out walks from William Contreras and Willy Adames to put Hoskins on top.

With the score tied at 2-2, he blasted a 386-foot home run to left to electrify the crowd and give the Brewers a quick 4-0 lead. It was the third grand slam of the season for Hoskins and the 10th of the season for Milwaukee, tying a franchise record set in 1995.

The three Grand Slams also represent a single-season franchise record, held by John Jaha (1995), Devon White (2001) and John Vander Wal (2003).

Arizona has 11 hits so far this season, leading the major leagues.
