City of Tonawanda opens public cooling centers this week

With a heat advisory going into effect this week in New York, many municipalities will be implementing ways to keep people cool.

The following locations in the City of Tonawanda will operate as cooling centers:

  • Town of Tonawanda Senior Center (291 Ensminger Road) — Monday to Friday: 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Kenmore Library (160 Delaware Road) — Monday: 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday: 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday: 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Kenilworth Library (318 Montrose Ave.) — Monday and Friday: 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Tonawanda’s outdoor pools are also open this week:

  • The Lincoln Park pool is open weekdays from noon to 8 p.m.
  • The two swimming pools at Mang Park will be open from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. from Wednesday to Friday.

The National Weather Service recommends that people observe the following precautions during a heat advisory:

“Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and watch your loved ones and neighbors. Under no circumstances should young children and pets be left unattended in vehicles. This is especially true in hot weather, when car interiors can reach deadly temperatures within minutes. »
