Peacock spotted in Missouri City, Texas neighborhood

Missouri City residents are used to seeing wildlife in their neighborhood, but this was something they had never seen before.

MISSOURI CITY, Texas — Missouri City residents are getting used to a new neighbor.

They live in the Glenn Lakes area of the Quail Valley subdivision near a nature preserve.

They’ve seen all kinds of animals over the years, from deer to alligators, but Sunday night they saw something for the first time.

“I looked up and saw the roof and said, ‘That’s a giant limb.’ I thought this huge limb had fallen on the house because we’ve been having storms lately and I looked up and said, ‘Wait, that limb is moving, it’s a peacock,’ said Jeanette Morales.

Morales said a beautiful Indian peacock — more accurately a peacock since the bird appears to be a male — crashed on the roof of his mother’s house.

She said the bird’s loud mating calls woke her up in the morning.

Morales said she called Missouri City Animal Control to report the bird, but was told it was being treated like a wild animal and unless it appeared to be injured, it was best to leave it leave alone.

Morales said the peacock was gone Monday morning when the lawn guy showed up, but she hopes he returns.

“I googled, is this a bad omen? I wasn’t sure what to think about it, but all cultures said it was a good sign, a good thing, so it was good. I was , like, oh, well, that’s great,” Morales said.

Peacocks are native to India, and the exact origin of their arrival in Texas is unclear. Rumor has it that a Houston family owned a 10-acre property and brought them to the area in 1980.
