HOUSTON (KIAH) – Host Maggie Flecknoe is LIVE on campus at Denver College of Nursing – Houston to get a behind-the-scenes look at how the staff trains our future healthcare heroes. She is joined by Campus President Chad Muse and Dean of Nursing Samantha Mitchell to discuss changes in nursing since COVID, as well as other faculty and students who share their ways of doing things . “Nurses make the difference”.

Nurses Week: Chad Muse, Campus Chair on Student Support and Philosophy

Today more than ever, there is a need for healthcare workers. Fortunately, the Denver College of Nursing offers top-level training for nurses. The campus president said the school not only trains nurses, but also celebrates them. “Our students give up a lot to achieve their dreams,” Muse said. “So we want them to feel appreciated from day one.”

Nurses Week: Shanell Noble, Simulation Lab Professor

The Denver College of Nursing – Houston campus provides hands-on experience for future nurses. Professor Shanell Noble said students carried out various simulations in class. Everything from fundamental basics to more advanced medical research simulations. “Experiencing that helps them be prepared and ready to go,” Noble said.

Nurses Week: Nursing Skills Lab Instructor Aaleayah Muhammad on the Skills Lab

Muhammad said the skills lab forms the foundation of the college’s nursing curriculum. “Students are able to learn and gain the practical experience they need in the field,” the professor said.

Tech-rich: new smart Apple iPads

Apple is unveiling an iPad with updated technology to help you find that lost Apple Pencil, plus plenty of other new features. Rich Demuro explains in today’s Rich on Tech.

Nurses Week: Dr. Samantha Mitchell, Dean of Nursing, on clinical judgment

Dr. Mitchell is the dean of nursing on the Houston campus. She said she was keen for students to understand the theory behind nursing practice. “We follow the clinical judgment model,” Mitchell said, “so they can provide excellent care to all of their patients and are ready to take the next step in becoming health care leaders .”

New coarse mini golf: Holey Moley

It’s too hot and humid to play golf, but it’s the perfect time to head to the new mini golf course: Trouy Moley. Michael Schreiber, CEO of Funlab and Holey Moley. He said the interactive experience is one of mini golf, cocktail dating, art, music and food. The venue also hosts several DJs, a superb bar and three 9-hole courses and karaoke rooms. Nurses Week: Hadiya Hyppolite, Student and Career Services Coordinator, on Student Success and Lifestyle

Hyppolite said the school offers great benefits to its students. The college is partnering with Aspire Mental Health and Wellness to ensure that students who have mental health issues, financial concerns, or need special needs counseling will receive it free of charge if needed. “Because we know how difficult balancing work, life and study is… we just want to be as supportive as possible,” she said.
