Bearded transgender inmate released from California women’s prison after ‘raping cellmate’

A transgender inmate was released from a California women’s prison after being charged with rape.

Tremaine Deon Carroll, 51, has been transferred to a men’s prison as he faces two counts of rape and one count of “discouraging a witness from testifying,” as first reported by feminist news site Reduxx.

One of Carroll’s alleged victims, Jane Doe, said she was attacked and raped in the shower at the Central California Women’s Facility in Chowchilla, about 150 miles southeast of San Francisco.

The criminal complaint also mentions a second, unnamed alleged victim.

Carroll is currently incarcerated at the all-male Valley State Prison in Delano.

Tremaine Deon Carroll, 51, who identifies as transgender, was transferred to a men’s prison on two counts of rape and one count of “discouraging a witness from testifying.”

DailyMail.com previously spoke to Jane Doe, who said she was the victim of a “completely penetrative” attack by her new cellmate Carroll in the shower in January 2024.

The alleged attack has left her with debilitating trauma and unable to shower for days. Basic hygiene is now a “trigger” that brings back the horror of her ordeal.

Jane Doe, a woman in her thirties and just over five feet tall, was serving a short prison sentence for burglary.

Sources familiar with her case say that after asking prison authorities to change her cell, she chose to room with two female inmates and an inmate who identifies herself as transgender, named Carroll.

According to court records, Carroll was charged with theft and weapons possession as a juvenile in 1988 and 1989.

In 1990, Carroll was arrested as an adult for involvement in the armed kidnapping, robbery and sexual assault of two women.

Carroll was charged with three counts of “oral sex,” which is the act of forcing the victim to perform oral sex. However, these charges were eventually dropped.

Carroll pleaded guilty to only two counts of kidnapping and was sentenced to 10 years and 8 months in prison.

After his release, Carroll, then 25, reoffended in 1998 and was arrested and convicted of robbing a jewelry store.

This crime sparked California’s “Three Strikes and You’re Out” law, which provides additional penalties for offenders with three felony convictions.

Carroll was sentenced to a minimum term of 25 years to life imprisonment and has been in prison ever since.

Today, Carroll is 51 years old, 6’2″ tall and weighs about 200 pounds. He is physically imposing.

In mug shots, Carroll has a thick black-gray beard and describes herself as a trans woman, although she has not undergone gender reassignment surgery.

Jane Doe claims that Carroll began showing sexual interest in her immediately after the cell change.

Carroll allegedly left her flirtatious notes. On the second day in the room, she claimed that Carroll had made her an offer.

Jane Doe said she refused all advances.

But less than 24 hours later, she claimed Carroll attacked and raped her while she was alone in the prison shower.

Sources told DailyMail.com that Jane Doe was subsequently taken to the hospital and humiliatingly restrained in arm and leg shackles while she underwent a gynecological examination.

After her release from the hospital, she was separated from the other prison inmates, strip-searched, and treated as if she were the perpetrator because Carroll had – reprehensibly – claimed that she was the rapist.

Carroll is now accused of two counts of rape – the alleged attack on Rebecca and another, unrelated attack on an unknown person around the same time.

Carroll is also accused of attempting to intimidate a witness to one of the attacks.

California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom signed the transgender incarceration law in September 2020.

Women’s rights activists said the allegations were a wake-up call for California’s prison system, which has transferred more than 44 biological male prisoners to all-female facilities since 2021.

Almost 200 further transfer requests are currently being examined.

According to a lawsuit filed by the Women’s Liberation Front (Wolf), a liberal feminist advocacy group, the CCWF installed condom vending machines after the law was passed.

This is not a requirement in California for the transfer of male prisoners to all-female prisons.

On September 29, 2020, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed the Transgender Respect, Agency, and Dignity Act, which allows incarcerated transgender, nonbinary, and intersex individuals to request accommodation “in a manner consistent with their gender identity.”

To request a transfer, prisoners simply have to prove their identity – and obtain permission from the prison authorities.

In August 2021, Carroll was transferred to CCWF following numerous complaints, including allegations of harassment by other inmates and allegations that she was the victim of more than 30 sexual assaults.

At CCWF prison, Carroll became a poster child for the state’s programs for transgender prisoners.

In an article for an unknown news website in 2022, Carroll described herself as a “trans woman” with the “heart of a girl and a confused mind.”
