Suspect arrested after gun found at West High School

A suspect is in custody after a gun was found at West High School, said Jon Rysewyk, superintendent of Knox County Schools.

According to Knoxville Police Department spokesman Scott Erland, security officers were alerted around 12:30 p.m. that a student may be carrying a weapon. Officers arrested the student and seized a handgun.

The student will be charged, Erland said.

The suspect was in custody when the school received a call about a threat on campus, according to a message sent to families. The school was locked down “out of an abundance of caution,” Rysewyk said.

“I would like to thank Principal (Ashley) Speas and her staff, our school security team and the KPD for their quick response,” Rysewyk said. “Today was the perfect example of how our systems and partnerships work to keep our students, staff and schools safe.”
