Patrice Evra reacts with bizarre video to reports of his 12-month suspended prison sentence

Patrice Evra responds to reports of his being given a 12-month suspended prison sentence overnight with a bizarre video on social media.

As reported by L’Equipe, he was sentenced on July 9 by the criminal court to a 12-month suspended prison sentence with provisional execution (which means that he is already subject to a series of conditions set by the judge), according to the Nanterre public prosecutor’s office.

The report further stated that the courts were accusing him of arrears of almost one million pounds in maintenance payments to his ex-wife Sandra Evra, with whom he has two children and from whom he has been separated for years.

However, the former Premier League player denies this fact as he believes he has already paid.

“The facts are disputed. Mr Evra has appealed,” says his lawyer Jérôme Boursican.

According to the Daily Mail, Evra was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years, and must pay his wife 4,000 euros (£3,358) in non-pecuniary damages and 2,000 euros (£1,679) in legal fees.

After the verdict, Evra’s lawyer, Jerome Bouriscan, insisted that his client “denies the facts” and insists that no payments are outstanding.

“Mr Patrice Evra appealed despite knowing that he had provided his wife with an apartment and a house with a swimming pool in the south of France and had lent her almost two million euros for her living expenses.” said Boursican.

“An amount she does not want to pay back, and that is the reason for this process.”

As you can imagine, this news subsequently made the rounds on social media, but now Patrice Evra has given his response.

In a video he posted on Instagram, he is seen wearing a prison jumpsuit and handcuffs playing basketball, apparently in a prison yard.

He wrote: “I want to stop this nonsense: look how much fun I had in prison 🤣🤣🤣 France loses at the European Championship and then writes something about Mister #ilovethisgame #ilovethisgame #freedom”

With a mischievous grin, he seems to take the situation lightly and turn a serious matter into a viral sensation.
