Hamburg’s Patrick Geary selected by Sabers in NHL draft

LAS VEGAS – Kevyn Adams and his Sabers scouting team didn’t look far to find the player they selected in the sixth round Saturday afternoon.

The Sabers selected Patrick Geary, a 6-foot-8 defenseman from Hamburg and a St. Francis High School alumnus who played his freshman year at Michigan State University. Geary, 20, scored five goals and 13 points in 32 games with the Spartans, whose coach, Adam Nightingale, is the brother of Jason Nightingale, the Sabres’ assistant director of amateur scouting.

Mike Harrington: The Sabres are (understandably) excited to get another first-round pick, but what about deals?

Helenius is a two-way center who wins faceoffs, and don’t think he’s another first-round Smurf. After watching Zach Benson for the last year, shouldn’t it be obvious that heart size is more important than body size?

Max Strbak, the Sabres’ 2023 second-round pick, also played at Michigan State last season. Geary played two seasons in the USHL before arriving on campus, then took on a prominent role on the Spartans’ blue line. He is a former Buffalo Jr. Sabres player, with whom he was coached by Tim Kennedy, who is a development coach with the Sabres.

Geary is the latest player with Western New York ties to be drafted by the Sabres since Adams took over as general manager, joining Clarence defenseman Gavin McCarthy (third round, 2023) and fellow Sabres Jr. Matteo Costantini (fifth round, 2020).
