Both African and Mexican cuisines are deeply rooted in American culinary traditions, producing a fusion born from the shared history of Southern blacks and Mexican braceros and their own vision of the power of masa. But in Houston, it’s not just Black American and Mexican flavors coming together. There are also various influences from Afro-Latin heritage, some of which can take a Southern approach, as the flavors of Mississippi Delta soul food merge with the spice and depth of traditional Mexican cuisine. Think crawfish and barbecue brisket tamales made with cornmeal instead of masa, reimagined seafood tacos stuffed with fried catfish, and earthy birria remixed into quesabirria tacos.

The connections between Houston’s Black American and Latinx communities, including their shared histories and flavors, have contributed to Houston’s reputation as an iconic dining destination. Use this map as a guide to discover some of Houston’s restaurants and food trucks specializing in exciting Black-Mexican fusions, as well as entrees from other Afro-Latinx cultures that have brought their flavors to the Houston area.
