Juneteenth Celebrations in Metro Atlanta

Juneteenth Celebrations in Metro Atlanta

People wave American and Pan-African flags while marching in the Atlanta Black History Parade on June 18, 2022 in Atlanta, United States. Juneteenth, or Emancipation Day, commemorates the end of chattel slavery on June 19, 1865 in Galvesto

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, and Liberation Day, is a holiday celebrated on Juneteenth to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. The name “Juneteenth” is a mixture of “June” and “nineteenth”, the date of the celebration.

This holiday marks the day in 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of slavery, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Proclamation of emancipation on January 1, 1863. Despite the proclamation, many slaves in Texas were unaware of their freedom due to slow dissemination of information and resistance from some slave owners.

Juneteenth has been celebrated annually since 1866, initially with church-centered community gatherings in Texas. Over the years it has evolved to include parades, festivals, educational events and family reunions. In recent times, it has gained greater recognition and is celebrated throughout the United States as a day of reflection on the freedom and achievements of African Americans, as well as a time to promote cultural pride and understanding .

In 2021, Juneteenth was officially recognized as a federal holiday in the United States, reinforcing its importance in American history and culture.
