In front of a lively crowd, the Steel City FC women’s team defeated FC Buffalo, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Founders Field to remain undefeated in the UWS championship after three matches.

After a scoreless first half, Steel City outlasted visitors Western New York, thanks to goals from Audrey Bianco (Hampton/CMU) and Morgan Kost (Trinity Christian/West Liberty).

Bianco converted a penalty, then it was Kost, who played with the club’s academy for several years, and is now in his third year with the club, who scored the winning goal in the second half, with help from a decisive pass. by Kaitlyn Killinger (Plum/Pitt). Sharing duties between the posts, Peyton O’Malley (Bowling Green/Chartiers Valley) played the first half, making four saves while Sofia DeCerb (Latrobe/James Madison) had the second half with two saves.

“I was super excited to score against Buffalo. The environment was great and I’m very grateful for the crowd support,” Kost said.

“I think the size of the crowd and the home win against a team like Buffalo shows how far this team has come and how much we have to offer in the future.”

Steel City improve to 2-0-1, good for five points, as they finally got over the hump by beating an FC Buffalo team that won both matches last season.

“To finally be better than FC Buffalo shows how far we have come as a group,” head coach Tom Ovenden said after the match.

“We have a good balance of experience and academy support and we are starting to see the fruits of the foundations we have built over the last five years.”

Next up for Steel City will be another home game at Founders Field, as they look to stay undefeated when they host Flower City Union on Sunday, June 16 at 5 p.m.
