State Department issues global travel warning for Pride Month due to possible terrorist attacks

Due to possible terrorist attacks, demonstrations or acts of violence against U.S. citizens, the U.S. State Department has issued a “global alert” for LGBTQ+ travelers and allies for Pride Month.

While the warning urged travellers to “remain vigilant in places frequented by tourists, including Pride celebrations and venues attended by LGBTQI+ people”, it did not specifically advise against travel to specific areas.

“The Department of State is aware of the increased potential for violence inspired by foreign terrorist organizations against LGBTQI+ individuals and events and advises U.S. citizens abroad to exercise increased caution,” the alert said.

This travel warning differs from the State Department’s usual travel warnings, which are on a scale from Level 1 (“Take usual precautions”) to Level 4 (“Do not travel”) and are issued only for certain countries.

The State Department advises tourists to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program. The program sends travelers alerts when a dangerous situation occurs at their destination.

The Smart Traveler Enrollment program also connects travelers with the local U.S. embassy in emergency situations.

The State Department also has a website specifically designed for LGBTQ+ travelers, which includes information on how to stay safe abroad and where to find a U.S. embassy.
