Motorcyclist and pedestrian killed in car collisions

HONOLULU (KHON2) – Two car crashes on Oahu and Maui killed a 39-year-old pedestrian and a 44-year-old motorcyclist from Lahaina.

On Friday, Maui Police responded to an accident on Honoapiilani Highway when it was reported that a 39-year-old Lahaina woman was attempting to lift a chicken carcass from the road when she was struck by a white 2014 BMW X5.


According to reports, the BMW driver did not stop to help the pedestrian but “fled the scene of the accident heading northeast on Honoapiilani Highway.”

The pedestrian was treated in the emergency room at Maui Memorial Medical Center for life-threatening injuries. During treatment, the pedestrian succumbed to her injuries and died.

That same night, Maui police found the BMW and the 34-year-old driver, who was arrested for collision resulting in death or serious bodily injury.

According to MPD, the driver was later released pending investigation.

On Saturday, a 44-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a traffic accident on the H-1 Freeway in Waipahu.

According to HPD’s Traffic Division, Negligent Manslaughter Unit, a 50-year-old male driver was slowing down on the highway due to another accident.

The driver was then hit from behind by the motorcyclist who was travelling at high speed. The motorcyclist was thrown onto the road, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
