A 47-year-old East Alton man who exchanged gunfire with police late Thursday night died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Illinois State Police Criminal Investigation Division Zone 6.

The victim was identified as Shannon Musgraves. The cause of death was determined by the Madison County Coroner during an autopsy on Friday.

Preliminary investigations revealed that members of the East Alton and Bethalto police exited their vehicles near the shooting when they were fired upon by a person inside the home. Officers returned fire without injuring any officers. The suspect then barricaded himself inside his home and East Alton police requested assistance from the Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System Special Response Team. The team found Musgraves inside his home with a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Illinois State Police continue to investigate the officer-involved shooting and will submit its findings to the Madison County District Attorney’s Office for review upon completion.
