‘Rest easy, good boy:’ Roxboro police K-9 Kilo dies after medical emergency

ROXBORO, N.C – The Roxboro Police Department is mourning the loss of a beloved and loyal K-9 police officer named Kilo, who passed away Saturday morning following an unexpected medical emergency that began earlier this week.

“On Tuesday morning, Kilo was at home off-duty when his caregiver noticed signs of bloat, a serious condition called GVD that causes the stomach to turn, which can be fatal,” officials wrote on the police department’s Facebook page Roxboro.

Kilo was taken to Bahama Road Veterinarian Hospital, where he arrived limp and “lifeless.” However, the team revived Kilo and initiated emergency surgery.

During surgery, Kilo’s spleen was found to be inverted and swollen, likely putting pressure on his abdomen that caused him to turn over.

Once his vitals were stable enough, they took him to NC State Veterinarian Hospital for intensive care. He began to go blind due to the trauma, but Kilo slowly became more alert and the care team was cautiously optimistic.

Unfortunately, Kilo’s blood counts were elevated due to bacteria, requiring further urgent surgery.

A memorial service will be planned and updates will be provided as they become available.
