Buffalo-bound bridge to cross Onondaga County today

Buffalo-bound bridge to cross Onondaga County today

Two barges carrying a massive pedestrian bridge spanning upstate New York over the Erie Canal to Buffalo will pass through Onondaga County today.

At 6 a.m., the boat left Sylvan Beach and entered Oneida Lake. It plans to reach Brewerton at Lock 23 around 9:45 a.m.

Carver Companies, which uses a tugboat and barge system to ferry the canal across the bridge to Buffalo’s Ralph Wilson Park, is posting arrival time updates on its Facebook and Instagram pages.

They plan to pass through Baldwinsville Lock 24 later today, although no specific time has been released at the time of writing.

The 266-foot bridge was originally built in Italy, spanning the ocean and up the Hudson River to the Erie Canal. When it is installed this fall, it will provide a new pedestrian entrance to Ralph Wilson Park across I-190 from Fourth Street.

The 81-metre pedestrian bridge was built last year by international company Cimolai at a factory in Italy, an hour north of Venice.

Live updates are also provided from the Ralph Wilson Park Bridge on Instagram.

Barge spotters have been posting their photos and updates as the bridge passes through their town on the Historic Erie Canal Facebook group.
