John Murphy, radio voice of the Buffalo Bills, to retire after 35 years

“The Voice of the Buffalo Bills” John Murphy, who spent the last 19 years as the team’s radio play-by-play announcer, announced his exit from the booth. Murphy previously spent 16 years as the Bills’ color analyst, first becoming involved with the team in 1984.

Even though he is stepping down from play-by-play duties, he remains open to contributing to game day broadcasts in a new role.

Murphy was inducted into the Buffalo Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame in 2019 and received the Dick Gallagher Legacy Award in 2022 for his contributions to the Buffalo community. He is also co-author of the book, If These Walls Could Talk: Buffalo Billsgiving fans a glimpse into the team’s history.

In recent seasons, Murphy has taken breaks due to health after suffering a stroke near the end of the 2022 season. Broadcaster Chris Brown had replaced Murphy on the Buffalo Bills Radio Network during these absences.

Murphy expressed his sincere desire to begin a new chapter in his life, emphasizing the deep bonds he has formed over the years. “I’m going to miss it a lot,” he said. “I’m going to miss the people more than anything.” He revealed that the decision to step down was made jointly with his wife, Mary, and that he feels at peace with the choice.

Bills owner Terry Pegula praised Murphy’s longtime passion and dedication, saying, “John’s love and enthusiasm for the Bills and Western New York is evident for over 30 years on the stand. We will all miss his big calls and his passion as a play-by-play announcer. We continue to wish him and his family all the best during his recovery and hope that he can continue to be a part of our organization in the future.

Bills head coach Sean McDermott said, “Murphy, congratulations on a tremendous career. It was such an honor to serve with you. You are one of the best to ever do it.

Added general manager Brandon Beane: “You will always be a Buffalo legend, a great in the community and a great with the Buffalo Bills. »
