Infant kidnapped from LaPlace found safe and sound in New Orleans; unknown suspect still at large

LAPLACE, Louisiana (WVUE) – A young boy who was reported abducted Tuesday (May 28) has been found safe and sound in New Orleans, the St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office said.

The agency said it had no further information on the child’s location. A New Orleans Police Department spokesman later confirmed the child’s location, but said, “The perpetrator of this incident has escaped and various law enforcement agencies are currently searching for him.”

The St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday afternoon that a woman reported being sexually assaulted and forcibly dragged from her vehicle. Officials said her 8-month-old son was still in the vehicle when her attacker fled the scene.

The agency had already identified a suspect on Tuesday, but Sheriff Mike Tregre told Fox 8 late Tuesday night that the man was no longer the suspect because his alibi had been confirmed.

The NOPD said it received a call reporting a fight between a man and a woman near the intersection of Murl and Vespasian streets in Algiers at 7:40 p.m. A witness told police the two then drove off in a blue car, leaving a toddler in a car seat on the curb.

New Orleans Police found the child and New Orleans Emergency Services was called to confirm the child was OK. NOPD then confirmed the boy was the child abducted from St. John Parish and said his mother was on her way to New Orleans to be reunited with him.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact NOPD Fourth District Detectives at (504) 658-6040 or Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
