Houston Academy softball moves to state status

Houston Academy lost its matchup to Orange Beach 4-1, but rebounded to earn the second state tournament qualifying spot with a 14-4 victory over TR Miller Tuesday in the Class 4A South Regional tournament at Gulf Shores.

Houston Academy 14, TR Miller 4: The Raiders’ offense was victorious against the Tigers, scoring three or four runs in each of the four innings.

Mary Suzan Aman had three hits with one RBI, Ansleigh Smith had two hits and three RBIs and Emily Adams had two hits and two RBIs to lead HA. Braya Hodges had a hit and three RBIs.

Emily Maddox and Jadyn Rausch both had a double and two runs and Anniston Harrison had two hits.

Hodges struck out 11 and allowed five hits to earn the pitcher’s victory.

Orange Beach 4, Houston Academy 1: Teagan Revette’s three-run homer in the top of the seventh broke a 1-1 tie and helped the Makos advance to the state tournament, while returning the Raiders to the loser’s bracket.

The Raiders loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but a grounder led to a force out to end the game.

Houston Academy scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to lead 1-0. Ansleigh Smith, Braya Hodges and Emily Adams had back-to-back singles with Adams’ hit scoring Smith.

Orange Beach (41-1) tied it in the top of the sixth on a run-scoring single by Ava Hodo before the Makos took the lead in the seventh. A single by Kaitlynn Robertson and a hit by KG Favors preceded Revette’s homer.

Houston Academy was held to five hits by Favors, who struck out 11. Three of the hits came in the fourth. Smith had two of the hits.

Adams pitched six-plus innings for HA, allowing five hits and three runs, while striking out three. Hodges got the final three outs, including two on strikeouts, but allowed two hits, including the home run.

TR Miller 5, Slocomb 4: Slocomb led 4-2 late in the game, but TR Miller scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to earn the victory and eliminate the RedTops.

Slocomb finished the season with a 20-8 record.

The RedTops scored two runs in the fourth inning and two in the sixth. In the fourth, Gracie Ward scored on a passed ball and Jacie Hall hit Emma Nichols on a single. In the sixth, an error on a grounder by Rylee Sanders allowed two runs to be scored.

Emma Nichols and Calie Seay both had two hits to lead Slocomb.

Nichols went all seven innings in the pitcher’s circle, striking out eight and allowing five runs, just four earned and seven hits.

Rehobeth 4, Brewbaker Tech 2: The Rebels advanced to the winner’s bracket final of the Class 5A South Regional tournament with a 4-2 victory over Brewbaker Tech.

Rehobeth scored three runs in the top of the fifth to break a 1-1 tie and held on for the win.

Mattox Richards had three hits, while Shelby Davis had two hits, including a two-run double in the fifth inning. Addy Kirkland had two hits and Brooke Nowlin had an RBI sacrifice fly for the Rebels.

Alex Cobb went all seven innings, allowing just two runs and scattering eight hits. She didn’t walk or strike out a batter.

Rehobeth 3, Academy of Faith 0: Baleigh Nowlin pitched a four-hit complete game shutout with five strikeouts and one walk, and the Rebels scored all three runs in the fourth inning in the first-round game.

Nowlin ran into some trouble in the second inning as a single and an error put two up with one out, but the Rebel pitcher got a strikeout and flied out to end the threat. An error and a single put two Faith runners on in the fifth, but Nowlin got a groundout to end the inning.

Locked in a scoreless tie, Rehobeth broke through in the bottom of the fourth. Kryslin Martin singled to open the inning and moved to third base on a steal and throwing error before scoring on a single by Jazzy Andrews. Andrews scored on a throwing error on Addy Kirkland’s ground ball and Nowlin singled Kirkland.

Rehobeth only had six hits, with Kirkland leading the way with two hits.

Gulf Shores 11, Promontory 1: Headland’s season ended with an 11-1 loss to Gulf Shores in the Class 5A South Regional tournament.

The Rams had just five hits from five players – Kynlee Watkins, Sophia Fitts, Stormi Clemmons, Maddie Shipes and Layla Goodwin.

Headland finished with a 10-25 record.

Saint-Paul 10, promontory 0: The Rams were shut out on three hits in a first-round loss to St. Paul’s.

Shaylee Greathouse, Annie Laye and Sophia Fitts each had a single for Headland.

St. Paul’s broke a scoreless tie with seven runs in the third and added two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to finish the game in five innings.

Leroy 7, Kinston 1: Kinston took an early lead, but the Bears scored seven runs over the final four innings and shut down the Bulldogs for the rest of the game.

Kinston fell to a loser’s game Wednesday morning against Fruitdale. The Bulldogs need to win three games Wednesday to reach the state tournament.

Lilli Sumlin had a solo homer and Brynne Kelley had three hits for Kinston.

Kinston 15, Red Level 0: Lauren Norris pitched a two-hit shutout in four innings with seven strikeouts and Brynne Kelley drove in four runs to lead Kinston’s first-round victory.

Norris allowed a single and a double in the first inning before retiring the final 11 batters she faced. Kelley had an RBI in the first inning, a run-scoring single in the third inning and a two-run single in the fourth.

Bella Lashley also had two hits for Kinston, while Aubrey Norris had a scoring triple and an RBI on a hit on a pitch with the bases loaded. Aubrie Brown had a two-run double and Madisyn Jones had a run-scoring single.

Brantley 15, Elba 0: Brantley took command of the match with an eight-run first inning and earned the first-round victory.

Anna Parker Little pitched a three-hit shutout in four innings with eight strikeouts and no walks for Brantley.

Coco Stamps had two hits and two runs and Alex Grimes had a two-run double with a two-run out. Mary Kay Kilcrease (sacrifice fly, ground out) and Hope Richardson (sacrifice fly, loaded walk on the bases) both drove in two runs. Mary Driggers added a run-scoring single and Emma Crawley had an RBI on a bases-loaded walk.

Elba finished with just three hits – a double from Mary B. O’Neal and a single from Kalleigh Russell and Destinee Tidwell.

Fruitdale 9, Elba Island 8: Elba’s season ended with a 9-8 loss to Fruitdale.

The Tigers finished with a 14-9-1 record.
