Driving under the influence of alcohol on a riding lawn mower – WGAU

An Oconee County man was arrested after he was caught driving a lawn mower while drunk.

On April 30, Oconee County officers stopped 64-year-old Willie Laguines after they saw him driving a lawnmower on the road westbound on Highway 186 near Payne Road.

Officers said they noticed Laguines removing a black can from his mouth and steering the lawnmower off the road.

According to officers, Laguines’ breath smelled of alcohol and he had a bag on the lawnmower near his feet.

When authorities asked Laguines why he was traveling, he replied that he was trying to get home. The sheriff’s office said he told officers he had left Golden Pantry.

Laguines is said to have thrown the beer can on the side of the road. He then showed officers the remaining beer cans in the bag, the report said.

OCSO said Laguines told officers he drove to the Golden Pantry 15 minutes before the stop. He told officers he had drunk a beer.

Laguines asked deputies to “give him a chance” and that “he has been in this situation before.”

Officials said Laguines told officers he was hit by a car in 2024 after driving his lawnmower on the road.

He was arrested and charged with driving under the influence (less safe), open container and a low speed vehicle violation. He was booked into the Oconee County Jail.
