Man injured in shooting involving Safford police officer Saturday morning

SAFFORD, AZ – A man was shot and injured by a Safford police officer Saturday morning.

Safford police said they were called to the area near the Chamber of Commerce on US-70 shortly before 10 a.m. for a report of an argument between a man and a woman.

During the argument, the man is said to have had a weapon with him and to have shown it at some point.

When officers arrived, they found the man and began giving him instructions on how to de-escalate the situation.

The man was allegedly uncooperative and allegedly pointed the gun at the police officer.

Then the officer shot the man.

Safford police said the man was taken to the hospital after the attack. The wounds were “not fatal,” but it was unclear how severe the injuries were.

It is also not clear whether any officers were injured in the incident.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety Major Incident Team was asked to investigate the shooting.

Safford is located about 46 miles west of the Arizona-New Mexico border.
