Are the Atlanta Hawks about to make another huge mistake?

Are the Atlanta Hawks about to make another huge mistake?

No one seems to have any idea what the Atlanta Hawks will do this summer, maybe even the Hawks. Certainly, the Hawks don’t have it easy considering they have to decide whether to trade one or both of their stars, which was made more complicated by the fact that they landed the first overall pick in the NBA draft lottery.

They weren’t expected to be in this position and this draft class is considered less than great. Still, there have been a few reports linking them to Connecticut center Donovan Clingan, suggesting they are considering taking him No. 1 overall. While he appears to be a formidable NBA center, perhaps even a future Defensive Player of the Year winner, his offensive potential isn’t as promising.

Compare him to Alexandre Sarr, who has two-way potential and more versatility, and it seems likely that he would be the perfect option for the number one pick instead of Clingan.

There has been a recent rumor that the San Antonio Spurs may be looking to trade up in the draft in an attempt to acquire the number one pick. If true, that would give the Atlanta Hawks the chance to acquire Clingan with the fourth pick while also being able to use the eighth pick.

In this case, the Hawks’ apparent interest in Clingan makes a lot more sense, but it’s far from guaranteed that the Hawks will look to move down in the draft. Assuming that’s not the case, then they should consider drafting Sarr, who has more offensive potential and a higher overall ceiling than Clingan.

Hawks fans are probably well aware of what’s at stake since the team drafted Luka Doncic and traded him for Trae Young and what would turn out to be Cam Reddish.

While Sarr doesn’t have as high a ceiling as Doncic did at the time, this move, along with a disastrous showing from Dejounte Murray, shows that the Hawks haven’t made any big decisions in recent years. Plus, they risk making another major mistake that will negatively affect them for years if they’re not careful.
