Screven County boy who beat cancer is honorary captain of the Atlanta Braves

A 12-year-old Screven County boy recently had some fun with the Atlanta Braves. Mikey Boswell of Sylvania served as honorary captain for the Braves in a game against the Chicago Cubs. Just two years ago, Mikey, a baseball player himself, developed a limp and thigh pain that impacted his ability to play his favorite game. Michael’s pediatrician referred him more than 170 miles from home to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta where he was diagnosed with cancer and immediately began treatment. Cancer was tough, but Mikey was tougher and in January of this year, Mikey officially rang the bell signifying the end of his chemotherapy. WJCL 22 News profiled Mikey and his battle with cancer in February. We’ve shared her inspiring story below. During his cancer treatment, Mikey received support and formed a special bond with a trained support dog named “Blanche.” The Boswell family also received support from the Savannah community. Run 4 a Reason and Rough Runners donated proceeds from the 6th Annual Stone Stairs of Death Run to the Boswell family.
