Rich Hill’s thoughts on his 2024 season with the Red Sox:The Red Sox recently re-signed pitcher Rich Hill to a minor league contract in an effort to bolster the team’s struggling staff.

Hill, 44, represents a unique acquisition given his experience (this will be his fourth stint in Boston). The left-hander could help the Red Sox in several potential roles.

He recently discussed his decision to return and what he hopes for in an interview with WEEI’s Rob Bradford on his podcast, “Baseball Isn’t Boring.” The veteran pitcher currently plays for the team’s Triple-A affiliate, the Worcester Red Sox.

According to Hill, the goal is to return to the MLB roster by September 1 due to roster rules.

“I mean, realistically, obviously, you’d have to wait until September 1st to have an opportunity to play and be on the playoff roster,” Hill told Bradford. “I think I have a lot of experience pitching in the playoffs and I understand what it takes to pitch in that environment. I just have to kind of make it as doable as possible and bring a level of understanding and experience to that situation. And that’s definitely one of the driving forces for me to come back and pitch.”

The Red Sox (67-59) are currently 3.5 games behind the Twins (71-56) for the final American League wild-card spot.

Hill, in five seasons pitching for Boston, went 12-8 with a 3.31 ERA over 185 innings pitched.
