NFL writer has a lot of faith in Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills offense heading into 2024

It was Thursday, April 26, 2018, when the Buffalo Bills marked a turning point in their history by moving from 12th to 7th place with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and selecting quarterback Josh Allen. The Bills had been in a quarterback shortage for a very long time, dating back to the days of Jim Kelly and Doug Flutie. Although Tyrod Taylor had some success with the Bills over the previous two seasons, he was not a franchise quarterback and most fans knew that. Sean McDermott was entering his second year as head coach of the Bills and the 2018 NFL Draft featured some great quarterback talent in Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Lamar Jackson and of course, the best to come out of this class in Allen .

There’s no doubt that Allen had some growing pains. He played carelessly and lost the ball. At the same time, he was drafted in a horrible situation, but still showed flashes of greatness despite a weak offensive line and one of the worst receivers he’s ever had. Between 2018 and 2019, Allen showed a quantum leap in production with a better supporting cast around him and was able to lead the Bills back into the playoffs, but unfortunately lost a heartbreaking overtime game to the Texas Texans. Houston in the wild card round.

In 2020, the NFL became aware of Allen’s identity and his performance since then. If not for Aaron Rodgers’ MVP season he had for the Packers (51 total touchdowns and only 5 interceptions), Allen would have easily won the MVP award without a doubt. He took the next step to a massive leap forward in Year 3 that helped the Bills not only win the division for the first time in 25 years, but also make the championship game of the AFC.

Since then, Allen has established himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the league and has maintained the Bills offense as one of the best units in the league thus far. There’s no doubt the offense will be different in 2024. Stefon Diggs is gone after being traded to Houston. Gabe Davis entered free agency and is now in Jacksonville. Even center Mitch Morse was released and also signed to Jacksonville. Brandon Beane has built an interesting wide receiver room this offseason with Khalil Shakir, Keon Coleman, Chase Claypool, Curtis Samuel, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Justin Shorter. Shakir is the only receiver on this list to catch a pass from Allen last season.

Despite many changes for Buffalo, Gennaro Filice of nfl.com still believes the Bills will be a top ten contender in 2024.

Filice ranked the Bills as the 8th best offense ahead of the Houston Texans and Indianapolis Colts. The only factor that put the Bills on this list according to Filice is none other than Josh Allen. Filice discussed how Allen has led the NFL in total touchdowns since 2020 with 174 total and how he has been one of the highest-rated quarterbacks in recent memory.

It’s simply called the “Josh Allen effect.” He’s a dynamic athlete who plays the most important position on the field, who can overcome defenders coming at him. Even though he’s getting older, he shows no signs of stopping. Filice is proving that there’s faith in what the Bills’ offense will look like next season despite all the major renovations it underwent this offseason.
