HPD fired shots while responding to a welfare check call at an apartment on North Stadium Drive near the Med Center, police say

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A call for a welfare check near the Texas Medical Center turned into gunfire and a suspect shot himself, according to the Houston Police Department.

On Wednesday around 3 p.m., HPD shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, that police were responding to an officer-involved shooting along North Stadium Drive.

In an updated press conference, police said that around 1:16 p.m., HPD received a wellness check call from an out-of-state person claiming a family member had made concerning statements about their well-being. Police were dispatched to the scene eight minutes later.

Upon arrival at 1:41 p.m., officers were unable to make contact with the person inside the apartment complex located in the 5900 block of North Stadium Drive. Minutes later, with the assistance of HFD, officers were able to enter the apartment when someone fired a gun multiple times. It’s unclear if the shots were fired at the officers, but it was nearby.

At that point, the police backed out of the apartment and took shelter outside. As they were leaving, police reportedly heard another gunshot and believed the suspect had killed himself.

SWAT was called to the scene to help clear the apartment. At approximately 4 p.m., the team determined that the individual was deceased.

An investigation is still underway into this matter.
