Tuscaloosa police identify pedestrian fatally struck by car

Tuscaloosa police have identified a 23-year-old pedestrian who was fatally struck by two trucks on I-359 early Wednesday morning.

Stephanie Taylor, a spokeswoman for the Tuscaloosa Police Department, said 23-year-old Brianna Shaunta Nelson was killed while crossing Interstate 359 at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Taylor said Nelson was crossing the southbound lanes when she was first struck by an oncoming van. Police believe a second driver in an SUV swerved after the first collision with the woman and then collided with another van, which then struck Brianna Nelson.

Taylor said when police arrived at the scene, Nelson was pronounced dead.

The TPD’s Traffic Homicide Unit, which investigates all traffic accidents resulting in death or serious injury, will take over the investigation.
