Family wants change in Wylie neighborhood after 5-year-old killed by suspected speeding car

WYLIE — In Wylie, a community is mourning the death of a five-year-old boy who was struck and killed by a car while riding his bike Wednesday evening.

It happened at the Glen Knoll Mobile Home Park on Alanis Drive. Residents said the speeding was getting out of control.

Carlos Alfredo-Ramos says his son Jaden was like any other five-year-old. Full of life. Adventurous.

“He liked to play,” he said. “He liked football. He liked to be outside. He was a kid.”

He said his son was riding his bike right in front of their house on Wednesday evening around 6:30 p.m. when a car hit him.

“I was the first one there to call 911, and that’s a vision you never get out of your head,” said neighbor Cheryl Heflin. “It’s a vision you never get over.”

Jaden died in the hospital.

Wylie police are investigating. They said the driver is still at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. Given the severity of the accident, Alfredo-Ramos believes the driver was speeding.

“He was driving at a speed limit that he was not allowed to respect,” said Alfredo-Ramos.

The speed limit in the Glen Knoll community is 15 miles per hour, but neighbors say this limit is often ignored.

“Young people drive by here without paying attention and speeding down the road all the time. And now we have a death and it’s just devastating,” said resident Rhonda Wright. “I just want something done for everyone.”

“Slow down and watch the kids,” Raelynn Taylor said.

Neighbors are spreading this message while also working to put up signs throughout the community encouraging people to reduce their speed.

“I just want everyone to pay attention to the speed limit and obey it,” Wright said.

They say they owe it to Jaden. The family has started a GoFundMe campaign to cover funeral costs.
