Marshalltown motorcyclist killed in three-vehicle accident | News, sports, jobs

A Marshalltown man was pronounced dead Saturday after he was life-flighted to a Des Moines hospital following a three-vehicle crash on Friday evening.

According to a crash report from the Iowa State Patrol (ISP), 70-year-old Douglas Michael Hanken of Marshalltown was riding his motorcycle on Highland Acres Road near the 238th Street intersection just after 7 pm Friday when 23-year-old Reahna Kaye Sawyer attempted to pass, struck Hanken and pushed him and his motorcycle into the oncoming lane, where he was hit by a 15-year-old driver.

Hanken died on Saturday at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. The investigation into the accident is ongoing with the ISP handling the technical crash investigation and the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office investigating the circumstances leading up to it.

Sheriff Joel Phillips said the 15-year-old driver was operating on a restricted license (learner’s permit) and would most likely be charged with a restricted license violation once the technical crash investigation is completed.

“These have been taking several months to complete depending on the complexity,” Phillips said of the investigations.
