Should the Atlanta Hawks be interested in this former lottery pick?

The Atlanta Hawks need to make a splash this offseason. They got a major boost in that department when they got lucky and won the NBA draft lottery. However, inserting the No. 1 pick into this lineup will not be a panacea. The Hawks need to break down their current backcourt of Dejounte Murray and Trae Young. The experiment just didn’t work.

So, to do that, the Hawks need to have a running mate for Young. The question is: why does this have to come from outside the franchise? During the Hawks’ two-game run to the NBA Finals a few seasons ago, Young and Bogdan Bogdanovic were one of the best offensive backcourts in the league.

In order to facilitate this, the Hawks need to find a player who checks a number of boxes. They must be able to create for themselves and others while strengthening the Hawks’ rebounding ability, something Murray has shown to be strong throughout his career. One potential answer to this question is none other than Josh Giddey of the OKC Thunder.

To put it simply, the Hawks need to make a major move or else they risk losing a few more years to Young’s prime. With him locked up for another three years, the Hawks need to show him they are willing to put the right pieces around him.

There are a few options for the Hawks if they want to make this trade. However, the best thing for the franchise would be to send Murray to the Thunder, as he would give them their best chance at getting a decent return that could help their future prospects. Realistically, the Hawks aren’t going to contend for a few seasons and they need to plan accordingly.
