New accessible playground opens at Buffalo’s Towpath Park

The ribbon was cut Thursday on Erie County’s new accessible playground.

The new $600,000 playground at Towpath Park in Buffalo is the seventh accessible playground installed in Erie County parks.

It is the first of these to have a water-themed design to highlight the view of the nearby Niagara River from the park. There are blue colors in the equipment and cast-in-place cladding, which include fish designs.

“Like the six other similar playgrounds we have installed in county parks, this one has special design elements that not only make it more fun for the children using it, but also connect it to the “nautical environment of the park,” said Erie County Executive Mark. C. Poloncarz.

Troy P. Schinzel, commissioner of the county Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry, said accessible playgrounds have been popular, helping to bring children of all ages and abilities together to interact.
